Jodie Foster 'to preside' over France's Cesar Awards

Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster is to preside over the 36th annual Cesar Awards next month, industry newspaper The Hollywood Reporter has said.

The Silence Of The Lambs star was raised partly in France and speaks the language perfectly.

She is the first foreign president of the French Oscars since Marcello Mastroianni in 1993.

French actor Antoine De Caunes will reprise his role as Master of Ceremonies.

Foster is no stranger to French cinema after starring in Eric Le Hung's 1977 film Moi, Fleur Bleue, Claude Chabrol's The Blood of Others in 1984 and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's A Very Long Engagement in 2004.

The ceremony, which will be held at the Chatelet Theater, takes place on 25 February.

Last year hard-hitting prison drama A Prophet won nine awards at the Cesar awards.

Jacques Audiard's film was named best movie at the ceremony, with additional prizes going to lead actor Tahar Rahim and the director himself.

Jodie Foster will add American flavour to France's version of the Oscars when the Academy Award-winning actress presides over the 36th annual Cesar Awards ceremony on February 25.

Foster, who was raised partly in France and speaks the language fluently, will be filming Roman Polanski's God Of Carnage in the country as of early February so won't have to travel far for the ceremony.

No stranger to French cinema, Foster has had roles in Eric Le Hung's 1977 film Moi Fleur Bleue, Claude Chabrol's The Blood Of Others in 1984 and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's A Very Long Engagement in 2004.

Foster is the first foreign president of the Cesar Awards since Marcello Mastroianni in 1993.

French actor Antoine De Caunes will reprise his role as master of ceremonies for the event held at the Chatelet Theatre and broadcast by Gallic pay TV giant Canal Plus.

The nominees will be announced on January 21 in Paris.

I wonder if by "Preside" they mean host? Though somehow I can't see her hosting in tradition of say the Oscars... I doubt it will be televised here, but we can always hope! sm44

The César Award is the national film award of France, first given out in 1975. The nominations are selected by the members of the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma.

The nationally televised award ceremony is held in the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris each February.

The name of the award comes from the sculptor César Baldaccini (1921–1998). The trophies are actual sculptures of the artist. They are considered to be the French equivalent of the American Academy Awards. The 35th Cesar Awards were presented on 27 February 2010.

Jodie Foster 'to preside' over France's Cesar Awards Empty Gibson's 'The Beaver' DVD stolen

Post  Eugene Thu Feb 03, 2011 6:02 pm

Actor Mel Gibson reportedly called in police after a DVD of his new movie " The Beaver" was stolen from his mailbox outside his Los Angeles home.

Contactmusic reports, production bosses at Summit Entertainment sent Gibson a copy of the film, directed by Jodie Foster, so he could view the final cut before its world premiere at the upcoming South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.

Gibson watched the film earlier this week and put it back in his mailbox, ready for collection by a courier Wednesday. But the DVD was not found when the delivery man came to pick up the package.

Officers at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are now investigating the matter as a petty theft.

All one has to do is troll the internet to find where it went. It wouldn't take VIncent D'Onofrio to figure it out. But then again, he'd find out sooner if he'd called the writers at NBC.

Jodie Foster 'to preside' over France's Cesar Awards Empty French Cinema Congratulates Itself At The Césars - VINGT Paris

Post  Eugene Tue Feb 22, 2011 5:09 pm

It is awards season for cinema throughout the Western world. The US already celebrated the Golden Globes, the UK just handed out its BAFTAS and – slipping in just before the Oscars – are the 36th Annual César Awards on Friday, 25 February, held at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
Nominated by the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma, the Césars celebrate the very best in French and foreign film, breaking down into the usual categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and so on. This year’s Académie is presided over by Jodie Foster and will be awarding a special honour to Quentin Tarantino, recognizing the auteur as “a great international artist” for his contributions to the cinematic arts.
Several up-and-comers have received quite a lot of critical acclaim for original stories and excellent performances, among them the Romain Duris / Vanessa Paradis cynical romantic comedy L’Arnacoeur, the quirky, innovative comedy Le Nom des Gens, and the oh-so-French biopic Gainsbourg Vie Héroique. While some of French cinema’s best loved actors are considered shoo-ins for Best Actor and Actress categories (Gerard Dépardieu for his performance in the timely pensioner dramedy Mammuth, and Catherine Deneuve for her turn as the trophy-wife-turned-businesswoman in Potiche), the real drama, as it were, is for the Best Picture and Best Director.
I’m interested in seeing what kind of wormhole comes into being when the old guard meets the new, as Roman Polanski and Mathieu Amalric are both nominated for Best Director. Their films, The Ghost Writer and Tournée respectively, are nominated for Best Picture as well as a host of other awards. While Polanski’s political thriller is clearly the work of a master filmmaker, Amalric’s homage to the sloppy, beautiful tragicomedy of showbiz and love might have been made by Polanski himself if he had stayed in Chinatown instead of taking that long detour to Bitter Moon.
In the Best Film category the favourite, of course, is Of Gods and Men, Xavier Beauvois’ account of five Trappist monks executed during the Algerian Civil War. The film has already lived through some controversy when it found itself in direct competition with Outside the Law at Cannes last year, Rachid Bouchareb’s dramatic saga set against the backdrop of Algerian independence and the Algerian War, and told very much from an Algerian’s point of view.
Bouchareb’s film was denounced by Lionnel Luca, a member of Sarkozy's UMP party, as “anti-French", but was nominated for an American Academy Award where Of Gods and Men was passed over altogether. The Césars have a two-day lead on the Oscars, and while no one will be surprised if Of Gods and Men wins the César for Best Film based on its merit alone, it would also not be surprising if the Académie bestows its highest honour on it as a snub to the American Academy Awards.
Curiously, three of the films nominated in the best foreign language category are American. If the French film industry really wanted to give a proper two-finger salute to Hollywood, they would give the award to Yogi Bear (of course, the US film industry would only chalk it up to yet another thing French and inexplicable, like honouring Jerry Lewis), although the guys at my video boutique firmly believe the Best Foreign Film award should go to Argentinian entry Dans ses yeux.

It was pretty interesting that Quentin Tarentino was being honored at this particular show.

Jodie, back in the 90's and even as recently as 4 years ago, never could very much good to say about him, or his films.

Oh, whatever. It could be a similar situation to Truman Capote yelling at Harper Lee: "At least I'VE written SEVERAL books, not just ONE." Heeheeeee…... fun
